The classroom is the center of the St. Louis School educational experience. But it doesn’t end there. In fact, it is just the beginning. We supplement the classroom and the textbook with a range of enrichment programs designed to enhance your child’s experience—making them better equipped academically, stronger spiritually and more well-rounded in every way.
We’re aware that some parents have questions if a Catholic education offers everything a public school education does. Look around and you’ll see that it is, in fact, much more.
Our goal at St. Louis School is to provide a variety of programs that spark the interests of all in our student community. Starting as early as preschool, students through Grade 5 enjoy enrichment programs designed to enhance their interests, cultivate their strengths and lead them to explore new ideas.
At St. Louis, we know all students benefit from enhanced enrichment opportunities—experiences that take them beyond the classroom and programs that put theory into hands-on practice.
We want to fan the flame of inquiry through the teasingly diverse selection of award-winning books in our Newbery Club—including Science Start! Students are entertained and inspired by our incredibly creative and passionate music and art programs. Classroom experiences are enhanced by Invention Convention. We reach out to performers, readers, deep thinkers, future athletes and civic leaders, and minds that love math and science.
In addition to our enhanced curriculum, we offer our students the gift of in-depth exploration in extracurricular activities that take them beyond the classroom. You’ll find that our enrichment opportunities go beyond the expected. Love to sing? Join our choirs. Love to build? Join our Lego Club. Love our small-school feeling? Of course you do—but did you know we have a concert band?
That’s just a small taste of what St. Louis School offers students. Time is precious, so we support your schedule by offering these opportunities before and after school, as well as during lunch periods. Join us!
St. Louis hosts monthly spirit assemblies at school that are open to family attendees. Spirit assemblies focus on an area of our faith in fun and interactive ways. Students sing, dance, and perform skits all while deepening their knowledge and understanding of our rich Catholic faith.
Students in the upper grades are paired as buddies each year with children in primary grades. Throughout the year, they help their younger friends with spiritual, recreational or academic activities. This is a wonderful opportunity for older students to model the attributes and values that are developed during their years at our school.
Coordinated by classroom teachers.
All students in grades 3-5 meet twice per month during the school day for chorus. They are taught various songs, which are performed once per year at either Colonial Day, the spring musical or an independent event.
School Coordinator: Emily Mancini
Fourth-graders and their families go back in time and transform the gym into a day during colonial times each winter. Everyone dresses in period clothing and partakes in activities that were common during this time in our history, such as butter making or woodworking. This is always a memorable day for everyone involved.
Coordinated by classroom teachers and room parents.
Teachers at every grade level select field trips each year to enhance the curriculum and provide opportunities for in-depth understanding of classroom material. Some examples of recent field trips include: Rochester Museum & Science Center, Rochester Children’s Theatre at Nazareth College, Memorial Art Gallery, Pittsford Community Library, the Pittsford fire house, Chase Farms, Genesee Country Village and Museums and other local cultural sites.
Students are invited to take private lessons in a multitude of orchestral instruments. These are scheduled during free time in a student’s school schedule and are available for an additional fee.
Our supplemental music programs offer a number of options for St. Louis students in grades 4 and 5. These programs include:
All students in Grade 4 learn how to play the violin. They perform on Colonial Day to showcase their progress.
School Coordinator: Liz Gowman
Every year since 1922, one book has been selected to receive the Newbery Medal for excellence in children’s literature. Fourth-through-fifth-grade students interested in reading are encouraged to join the Newbery club and read these great stories. After completing a Newbery book, volunteer parents ask the student questions about the book at a Newbery conference. Through this discussion, students demonstrate understanding of the book and then denote their completion of reading a Newbery book by updating a chart kept in the library. A special party is held each year for Newbery Club participants who read four or more Newbery books per year.
School Coordinator: Susan Conlogue
Any child who plays an orchestral instrument is welcome to join the school band. Weekly rehearsals are held before school, and children perform during school Mass, prayer services and special events.
Children in third grade receive instruction in playing the recorder, which culminates in a concert each spring.
Select students from St. Louis participate in local spelling bees. We are proud to have had a Monroe County Catholic Schools Spelling Bee winner in the past!
St. Louis School students experience the security of being nurtured in our parish family. Students, faculty and staff live, work and play in the light of our Catholic faith. We explore our rich tradition and its meaning in our lives and classroom study. We celebrate our faith together and actively participate in Mass as a school, and as cantors, lectors and altar servers. We practice our faith through our service projects, serving our parish, community and world.
We are FAITH IN ACTION. St. Louis School children know they make a difference in the world. Why? Because they built a school—not just the one you walk through today, but one thousands of miles away: St. Louis School in Mautuma, Kenya. Established in 1998, our sister school stays connected to our students.
Each month a grade takes responsbility for a Mission of the Month. Students communicate with the school through posters and morning annoucements, sharing how their class is supporting the mission. Some examples of Mission of the Month are Coat Drives for Saints Place, Thanksgiving Food Drives for Villa of Hope, collections for Lollypop Farms etc.
At St. Louis School, we not only practice our faith, we put it into ACTION.
During mid-winter, our school becomes abuzz with activities to celebrate Catholic schools! We kick off the celebration with an energizing Mass. Throughout the month, we show our support for the Pittsford Food Cupboard by contributing canned goods to the “Souper Bowl.” We remember days gone by through Colonial Days (see Academic Enrichment). We also take the time for some fun together as a school through festivities, such as the Ice Cream Social and rollerskating in Reddington Hall (see Social Activities). Each year brings something new; in recent years, we have had the pleasure of enjoying an indoor family picnic, Bus Driver Appreciation Day and an Odyssey of the Mind Showoff (see Extracurricular Activities).
Each year, the miracle of Christmas is presented to the school community, family and friends through the Christmas Pageant. With a different performance each year, it is always exciting to see what the students can do. Rehearsals take place during the school day, and an afternoon and evening performance can be enjoyed by all. This performance is led by the second-graders and fifth-graders, and is coordinated by classroom teachers.
Praying together is an important component of our Catholic school. We celebrate the liturgy on holy days and other special occasions, such as school Mass and Catholic Schools Awareness Month. Students at all grade levels participate in the liturgies by representing their class in the procession, leading the music liturgy, reading from the Bible and reciting the Prayers of the Faithful. Parents are always welcome to join their children at any school Mass.
During the month of May, fifth-grade students lead the school in a celebration honoring Mary with music, prayer and song.
Students participate in a multitude of service projects throughout the year, benefiting organizations and individuals from Pittsford, NY, to Mautuma, Kenya. See our Mission Projects page for a description of all the great acts of kindness in which our students participate each year.
Throughout the school year, students come together as a class, grade or entire student body to give thanks for our many blessings and to pray together.
Students at all grade levels are welcome to participate in the recitation of the Rosary on Thursdays throughout the school year. Volunteers lead children through the prayers during a service at the recess hour. Parents are welcome to join their children, too.
Saint’s Place is a volunteer organization, based on Christian values, that provides household goods, clothing and education to legal refugees of all races and creeds who settle in the Rochester, NY, area to escape violence, discrimination and poverty. Click here to learn more.
We believe the best experiences in life happen when we put what we know into what we love. At St. Louis school, we believe in nurturing the whole child—mind, body and spirit. Uniqueness, values and excellence are the essence of who we are and what we do.
As a parent, you entrust your child to our school for the best possible education. However, your involvement does not stop at the school door—we want you to come in and get involved! We offer opportunities not only for your child, but also for your family!
Social outlets are everywhere at St. Louis School. You can hear it in the joyful exuberance during recess and play times. Witness it in our young leaders enjoying the camaraderie of our Cub Scout, Daisy and Girl Scout troops. See it in our young athletes combining learning and fair play in our CYO basketball teams, and staying together in town sports like Pittsford Mustangs soccer and Little League.
But most of all, there is a lot of family fun to be had! The Family Picnic, Ice Cream Social, Seabreeze Family Day and GALA are all wonderful ways for our families to gather for fellowship and fun!
Children in Pre-School through fourth grade dress up in costume for Halloween and parents are invited to celebrate at the annual Halloween parade.
One night each February, Reddington Hall is transformed into a virtual summer celebration, complete with ice cream sundaes, entertainment and excitement. This is one night you won’t forget!
Early in September, families gather for an evening picnic to kick off the school year and for families new and old to connect! This is always a much-enjoyed event and one you won’t want to miss!
During the last week of school, one day is designated for family fun and recreation at Seabreeze Amusement Park. This is a fabulous and fun way to celebrate the beginning of summer vacation!
